ALL EYES ARE ON PARIS AS A CELEBRATION OF MUSIC OPENS THE 2024
OLYMPICS. HERE ARE SOME OF THE KEY MUSICAL MOMENTS.
The world came together on Friday 26 July to watch the 2024 Olympics opening
ceremony, which took place among some of most iconic landmarks in Paris. The
festivities began with the athlete’s arrival via sailing boats along the River Seine as
hundreds of performers took to the streets to showcase an array of music, art and
dance. Upon the golden stairs by the River Seine, US pop-star Lady Gaga was
surrounded by a sea of black and pink pom poms as she performed a burlesque
inspired entrance before performing her rendition of “Mon Truc en Plumes” by Zizi
Jeanmaire entirely in French. Aya Nakamura, the most streamed French artist in the
world, was a vision in gold as she took centre stage. With support from dancers and
an orchestra, Nakamura performed her hit track ““Pookie, Djadja,” before moving on
to Charles Aznavour’s “For Me Formidable” and “La Bohème”. Mezzo soprano Axelle
Saint-Cirel delivered an outstanding operatic version of La Marseillaise, the French
national anthem while standing above the city as she stood on the roof of the Grand-
Palais. Adding a cinematic element to the ceremony, pianist Sofian Pamart and
singer Juliette Armanet performed their version of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s
“Imagine” in a moment of unity for the Olympics. The duo floated down the river on a
raft as the piano was ablaze. Adorned in jewels, Celine Dion made a triumphal return
to the world stage following her Stiff Person Syndrome diagnosis in 2022. As the
Eiffel Tower glistening in the background, Dion closed the ceremony with a heartfelt
rendition of Edith Piaf’s “Hymne a L’amour” in French.

be a hit with music lovers around the country who have grown to love the eclectic
and energic program. While the reason for this year’s cancellation is unknown, the
open-ended message in Spilt Milk’s statement leads to a hopeful resolution for next
year.
